●アスリート（athlete）
「運動選手」を意味するアスリートという言葉は、ここ数年、日本語の中で使われる頻度が増えてきた。アスリートは、英語の athlete をカタカナ書きにしたものだが、「ス」は th なので注意が必要だ。また、日本語のアスリートが平板アクセントであるのに対して、英語では最初の a を強く発音する 。
「アスリート」がよく使われるようになるかなり以前から、「フィールド・アスレチック」や「アスレチック・ジム」などの形で、「アスレチック」という言葉は日本語に入り込んでいた。「アスリート」が、すんなり日本語の中に入ることができたのは、そういう土壌があったからだろう。
英語では、 athlete は、いろいろあるスポーツの選手の中でも、もともと陸上選手のイメージが強いが、これは、イギリス英語で「陸上競技」のことを athletics （アスレティックス：「レ」を強く発音）と呼ぶからである。ちなみに、アメリカでは、陸上競技のことを track and field （トラック・アンド・フィールド）と呼ぶ。
athletics や athlete は、ギリシャ語の athlon を起源としているが、athlon と言えば、triathlon （トライアスロン）を思い出す。トライアスロンは水泳、自転車、長距離走の3種目を連続してこなす鉄人レースだが、昔からある「十種競技」は decathlon （ディカスロン）、「七種競技」は heptathlon（ヘプタスロン）、「五種競技」は pentathlon （ペンタスロン）である。
●円盤投げはdiscus（ディスカス）、砲丸投げは shot put （ショット・プット）、ハンマー投げはhammer throw、やり投げは javelin （ジャブリン）。
●走り幅跳びは long jump、走り高跳びは high jump、三段跳びは triple jump、棒高跳びは pole vault （ポール・ヴォールト）。
