●バーチャル（virtual）
英語の単語｢バーチャル（virtual）｣は、バーチャル・リアリティーという言葉が使われ始めた頃から、日本語の会話や文章の中でも盛んに使われるようになった。
バーチャル・リアリティーは、｢仮想現実感｣などと訳されるが、コンピュータ技術を応用して、特殊な眼鏡のようなものや、体の動きを感知するセンサーなどを着用することによって仮想の世界を体験できるシステムを表す言葉として、使われ始めた。
ところで、辞書などで調べると分かるが、英語の virtual は、｢仮想の｣というより、｢実質上の｣、｢事実上の｣という意味で使われる方が実際には多い。virtual reality のそもそもの意味も、｢ほとんど現実のように感じられるもの｣ということである。
日本で今、たとえば｢バーチャル商店街｣と言えば、実際の商店街ではなく、インターネットの中で複数のネットショップを集めたサイトのことだったりする。 また、｢バーチャルお見合い｣や｢バーチャル墓参り｣など、現実世界のものごとをコンピューターやネットワーク上で再現したものを表すのに、｢バーチャル｣が使われている。
英語では、形容詞の virtual よりも、｢事実上｣や｢ほとんど｣という意味の副詞 virtually （ヴァーチュアリー）の方が、よく使われる。たとえば、"It is virtually impossible to build a stadium in three weeks." と言えば、｢スタジアムを3週間で建設するのは、ほとんど不可能だ｣という意味になる。
●英単語の中の｢V｣の音をカタカナの｢バ｣行で表すのは、やはり気になる。｢バーチャル｣って｢婆ちゃん｣と関係あるのか、と茶化したくなってしまう。
●｢ほとんど｣という意味の virtually は、almost と言い換えることもできる。
