●リベンジ（revenge）
最近、リベンジという言葉が、スポーツ報道の世界でよく使われる。かつて負かされたことのある対戦相手に再び挑むこと、または、再び挑んで勝つこと、という意味である。
revenge を英和辞典で調べると、｢復讐｣、｢仕返し｣、｢腹いせ｣、｢雪辱戦｣などという日本語訳が出ている。スポーツ報道の｢リベンジ｣は、英語の revenge をそのまま日本語に取り入れたものだが、日本では、昔から｢雪辱｣がよく使われている。英語では、雪辱戦のことを revenge match などという。
revenge は、スポーツの世界だけで使われるわけではない。During a wedding ceremony the groom was murdered out of revenge. は、｢結婚式の途中で、花婿は復讐のために殺された｣という意味である。 ｢復讐する｣は、take revenge という言い方ができる。例えば、｢私は彼らに復讐した｣は、"I took revenge against them." と言える。
スポーツ報道で使われることはないが、英語では、復讐という意味で retaliation（リタリエーション）もよく使われる。retaliation は、｢復讐する｣、｢報復する｣という意味の動詞 retaliate （リタリエイト）の名詞形である。retaliation といえば、紛争やテロ、ギャングの抗争などにおける報復が連想される。
雪辱の｢雪｣は、｢洗い清める｣という意味だそうである。つまり、受けた辱め（はずかしめ）を洗い清めるのが、雪辱である。｢雪辱｣からは、｢汚名返上｣や｢名誉挽回｣などの言葉が思い浮かぶ。ときどき、｢汚名挽回｣と言う人がいるが、｢汚名｣は｢挽回する｣（= 取り戻す）べきものではなく、｢突き返す｣べきものである。
