●エステ（aesthetic salon）
エステは、エステティック・サロン（aesthetic salon）の短縮形である。エステティック・サロンとは、主に女性が、自分の顔や体を美しくしてもらうことを目的として、お金を払ってしてもらう 美顔や脱毛や痩身など（他にもいろいろ種類があると思うけど・・・）といったサービスを提供するところのことである。
辞書を引くと、aesthetic （エステティック）には、美的な、美学の、審美的な、という訳が出ている。The social value of a work of art has long played an important role in determinations of the aesthetic value of a work. とは、「芸術作品の社会的な価値は、長い間、作品の美的な価値を判断するうえで重要な役割を果たしてきた」ということである。
このように、aesthetic という英単語自体は、本来は哲学や美術などの文脈で使われることの多い、ちょっと難しい感じの言葉である。
aesthetic というつづりを見れば分かるが、「エステ」の「テ」の部分は、英語では、上の前歯の裏側に舌先をつけながら発音する「ス」に近い感じの th である。英語の発音やつづりを覚えたい人は、「エスセ」と覚えておくといいかもしれない。
もともとエステティック・サロンの略だ った「エステ」だが、最近では、エステティック・サロンで行われるサービスのことを指すようにもなってきた。「エステに通う」だけでなく、「エステをしてもらう」などという言い方もする。確かに、「サロン」という場所を表す言葉が略されてしまえば、そうなるのも無理はない。それに、見方を変えれば、aesthetic service や aesthetic treatment の略だと考えることも、できなくはない。
